Poland Detains 54 Undocumented Migrants Near Lithuanian Border

Poland’s Border Guard has detained 54 undocumented migrants who were being transported in a truck near the country’s border with Lithuania, authorities said. The truck, which was registered in Romania and driven by a Romanian national, was stopped during a border operation. According to the Border Guard, those on board included 30 Pakistani nationals, 15 Afghans and nine Bangladeshis. Officials said the migrants will be returned to Lithuania under the readmission procedure, while an investigation is underway into the suspected migrant smuggling operation and the circumstances surrounding the attempted border crossing. The incident reflects shifting migration routes in the region. While illegal crossing attempts along the Belarus–Poland border have declined in recent months, migration pressure has increasingly shifted to the Belarus–Latvia border. After entering Latvia from Belarus, many migrants continue their journey through Lithuania and Poland in an attempt to reach Western European countries. Polish authorities have therefore stepped up interceptions along the Polish–Lithuanian border, where temporary border controls remain in place.
