Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised US President Donald Trump’s approach to the war with Russia, saying Washington’s recent decisions could weaken Ukraine’s position. Zelensky has warned that Ukraine would struggle to withstand both Russia and the United States if Washington formally sided with Moscow.
His remarks come amid disagreements over US policy towards Russia, including sanctions and measures affecting Russian oil exports. Zelensky has argued that easing restrictions could benefit Moscow and help it sustain its war effort. He has also expressed frustration with Trump’s approach, saying it was painful when the US president appeared to take Russia’s side in the conflict.
Despite growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington, Zelensky has said he hopes Trump will reconsider his position. The US has also confirmed the resumption of intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, which is important for detecting Russian missile attacks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the war should be brought to an end through a negotiated settlement.
