Putin Rejects Zelensky’s Request for Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a direct meeting to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, saying there is currently no reason for such talks. Zelensky had called for face-to-face negotiations and a ceasefire in a letter to Putin. However, Putin described the letter as “impolite” and said peace negotiations should take place before any ceasefire is implemented. He said Russia is seeking a long-term settlement and that the war will end only when the country’s objectives are achieved. Zelensky, in response, said Russia had “once again chosen war” and expressed concern over the continuation of attacks. Fighting between the two sides continues. Ukraine has reported targeting several vessels in the Sea of Azov, while Russia has reported ongoing strikes on Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said at least 13 people were killed and dozens more injured in Russian attacks over the past 24 hours.
