HERAT: Local sources have reported that child laborers in Herat are facing a dire situation due to the cold winter and economic challenges. According to the sources, many of these children are the heads of their families (breadwinners), and some are forced to spend winter nights alongside the roads and in front of closed shops, as their homes are far from their workplaces. The sources indicate that harsh cold, recent rainfall, and low wages have subjected these children to numerous hardships. They often undertake heavy labor to meet the needs of their families. This situation arises despite previous assertions from UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, that every child should grow up in a safe, healthy, and secure environment, with access to education, proper nutrition, and social support.
