Pakistan is in talks with Kuwait over a proposed defence agreement that would be linked to expanded energy cooperation and investment, according to informed sources cited by Reuters. The sources said the discussions are still at an early stage, but added that the negotiations have become more complicated amid the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. According to the report, Pakistan signed a similar defence agreement with Saudi Arabia last year, under which any attack on Saudi Arabia would be regarded as having implications for Pakistan’s own security. Analysts have also expressed concerns that a defence agreement between Pakistan and Kuwait could raise questions about Islamabad’s neutrality and its role as a potential mediator in the continuing tensions between Iran and the United States.
