UK authorities say they are in contact with Pakistani officials over the potential deportation of 73-year-old Pakistani-born sex offender Shabir Ahmed, but a 55-year-old legal provision is preventing his removal. Ahmed, who has been described as a key figure in a grooming gang involved in the sexual exploitation of children, was released from prison earlier this week after serving his sentence. His British citizenship was previously revoked in 2012 due to convictions linked to child sexual offences. Calls from victims’ families and some political figures have intensified for his deportation. However, the government says current legislation does not allow for his removal. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has instructed the Home Office to review the case. His office said the UK has raised the matter with authorities in Islamabad and is exploring all legal avenues to deport foreign offenders. Downing Street added that the cooperation of the offender’s country of origin is required for deportation, and that past experience shows this is not always possible. The government said efforts are ongoing, working with relevant agencies to find a resolution to the case.
