The European Union has appointed Nicola Blomo, an Italian diplomat, as its new Chargé d’Affaires in Afghanistan as part of recent changes within its diplomatic missions. Under the appointment, Blomo will succeed Veronica Boskovic Pohar, who has headed the EU’s representation in Afghanistan in recent years. Diplomatic sources say the change comes at a time when the European Union remains one of the key international actors involved in humanitarian assistance, development programmes and political engagement related to Afghanistan. Blomo is expected to focus on coordinating EU initiatives, maintaining contacts with Afghan authorities and overseeing the bloc’s support programmes in the country. The appointment of the Italian diplomat comes as Brussels continues efforts to maintain its presence and role in Afghanistan through its delegation, while supporting aid operations and engagement with domestic and international stakeholders.
