Taliban Also Ban Online Chess Games

Sources in Herat say the Taliban have instructed chess players to refrain from playing online as well, in a move implemented following increased monitoring by the group’s morality authorities in the province. Sources confirmed on Friday, May 15, that local chess networks, which had been organizing online tournaments after in-person competitions were halted, have now suspended their activities. A notice issued by one of the networks said its activities would remain suspended “until further notice.” The Taliban had also banned chess last year over what they described as “religious considerations.” Taliban officials said chess activities would not be permitted until the matter had been reviewed. After chess clubs were closed, many players had turned to online competitions. With the latest restriction, that option has also been removed. Some athletes say the decision will negatively affect the development of chess and competitive opportunities for young people.
