Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, stated during an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Governors that following the escalation of military attacks in Iran and the wider region, the agency has immediately begun monitoring potential radiological emergency conditions. He said that, so far, no abnormal increase in radiation levels has been recorded in countries bordering Iran, and there is no indication of damage to nuclear facilities, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor. However, communication with Iranian supervisory authorities has remained unanswered. Grossi warned that attacks on nuclear installations could lead to the release of radioactive materials and serious transboundary consequences. He described the current situation as “highly concerning” and said that the possibility of a radiological incident with widespread impact, including potential large-scale evacuations, cannot be ruled out. The Director General emphasized that to prevent further escalation of the crisis and ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, a return to diplomacy is necessary as soon as possible. He added that the agency is prepared to provide technical and impartial assistance at any time to help find a peaceful solution.
