KABUL: Rahmatullah Nabil, the former head of Afghanistan’s National Security, has criticized the Taliban’s logic and their interpretation of religion. Nabil said the Taliban have, for years, justified the right to engage in violence and “killing” while cloaking themselves in women’s clothing. He cited the example of an Afghan girl who was compelled to wear male clothing solely to “support” her family and earn a living. He stated that one party (the Taliban) does this to take lives, while the other party (the girl) does it to save lives. According to Nabil, in the Taliban’s logic, their actions (wearing clothes for killing) are considered “permissible,” whereas a girl’s necessity is deemed “forbidden.” He pointed out the disparity in their interpretations of religion: The Taliban deemed it acceptable to wear women’s clothes and kill people; However, a girl, to support her family, is forced to wear male clothing. One side takes life, and the other strives for life preservation; according to their logic, the former is acceptable while the latter is not. The comments come in the wake of reports that the Taliban arrested an Afghan girl for wearing boys’ clothes. It is said that this girl was compelled to do so to provide a loaf of bread for her impoverished family. The arrest has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many people citing it as a sign of the severe restrictions imposed on women by the current regime and highlighting the poverty and coercion they face.
