KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan, has stated that the ongoing violence between security forces and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has resulted in significant casualties among both security personnel and civilians. He warned that if the Pakistani government believes this issue can be resolved through military means, it is making a grave mistake. Khalilzad emphasized that, in his view, the Pakistani government currently lacks a reliable strategy. He urged that it is time to shift from a military approach to a political one and to engage in peace talks with the TTP. He pointed out that Pakistan has always requested the U.S. and the former Afghan government to negotiate with the Afghan Taliban and seek a political solution. Now, he asserted, it is Pakistan’s turn to initiate efforts for political dialogue with the TTP. Khalilzad also mentioned that Afghanistan should assist Pakistan in the early stages of these talks and the peace process.
