Increase in U.S. tariffs and its impact on Afghanistan’s trade

KABUL: A new order from Donald Trump has come into effect today, raising tariffs on imports, including those from Afghanistan, from 10% to 15%. The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce has described this decision as concerning, noting that while trade with the U.S. is limited, the increased tariffs could harm exports of items such as carpets and handicrafts. Khan Jan Alkozai stated that last year, Afghanistan exported approximately $9 million worth of goods to the U.S. while importing $14 million. Economists have warned that the rise in tariffs, amid Afghanistan’s challenging economic conditions, could have negative repercussions. At the same time, tensions between India and Pakistan have also impacted regional trade, with the closure of the Wagah border causing significant losses for Afghan traders. Trade volume with Pakistan has decreased by 60%.
