KABUL: Since August 2021, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has hosted over 17,600 Afghan nationals, facilitating their relocation to 21 different countries. This statement from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes amid reports of the forced return of some Afghan refugees to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. While the ministry did not directly comment on these recent reports, it noted that approximately 17,619 Afghan individuals have been provided temporary assistance at the Abu Dhabi facility, costing around $367 million. Additionally, the UAE announced that following the Taliban’s takeover, it safely evacuated 41,000 individuals, including Afghans and foreign nationals, during emergency evacuations from Afghanistan. Recently, Reuters reported that the UAE has sent some Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan. According to the report, at least two Afghan families were returned this month, and arrangements were made for the deportation of 25 others, although their current status has not been confirmed. In response to these reports, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that he would take action to rescue these Afghans.
