Hamidullah Mohib, Afghanistan’s former national security adviser, and journalist Tim Hussain have published Shadows Over Kabul with Bloomsbury.
In the book, Mohib strongly criticises Zalmay Khalilzad’s role in US negotiations with the Taliban, as well as the process that led to the Doha agreement and the withdrawal of US forces.
Mohib argues that the Afghan government was excluded from key parts of the negotiations. He also describes the collapse of the republic as the result of a series of decisions and events that weakened the government and strengthened the Taliban’s position.
The book is based on interviews with Mohib conducted between 2021 and 2024 and presents his personal account of the events that preceded the fall of the Afghan republic.
