Afghanistan Enters Sixth Year Without Nationwide Elections

Afghanistan has entered its sixth year without nationwide elections, as the country remains under Taliban rule.

No nationwide elections have been held since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, while political parties have also been prevented from operating.

The absence of elections and restrictions on political activity continue as the international community marks World Democracy Day, which highlights public participation, citizens’ rights, the rule of law and the role of people in political decision-making.

Before the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan held presidential, parliamentary and local elections. The current political system, established after the Taliban returned to power, has not been formed through nationwide elections.
