German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said his government will soon present measures to ease the impact of record fuel prices on consumers.
Merz said the rising cost of petrol and diesel had reached a level that was becoming difficult for people who rely on their cars every day.
Germany’s nationwide average price for E10 petrol has risen to €2.286 per litre, a record high, while diesel has reached €2.412 per litre, according to the German Automobile Association (ADAC).
Merz did not provide details of the planned measures, saying the federal government, Germany’s states and coalition partners were still discussing how to respond to the increase.
The rise in fuel prices comes amid wider energy market pressures and instability linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
The German government has previously introduced temporary measures to reduce fuel costs, including cuts to fuel taxes.
