Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Tehran came to New York to lay the foundations for peace, but warned that Iran would stand firm against any aggression, even if it led to what he called an “apocalyptic war”.
In a post on X on Sunday, Araghchi shared excerpts from an interview with NBC, saying: “Masoud Pezeshkian and I did not come to New York to sell war. We came to lay the foundations for peace.”
He said Iran was also prepared for “real diplomacy”, while maintaining that the country was ready to respond to any attack.
During the interview, Mr Araghchi defended Iran’s proposed seven-day plan to de-escalate tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
He called for the release of Iran’s frozen assets and the lifting of economic restrictions, saying Tehran was confident in its ability to deal with the situation.
“We are ready for diplomacy, and at the same time we are ready for war,” he said. “If they want to test us again, we are fully prepared.”
