Several countries in the region have suspended or restricted flights operated by Iranian airlines following new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
The United Arab Emirates has suspended flights by Iranian airlines to and from the country until further notice. Oman has also introduced restrictions affecting Iranian carriers.
Reports say flights operated by Iranian airlines to some destinations in Iraq, Azerbaijan and Georgia have also been suspended or restricted. One flight from Tehran to Dushanbe was forced to return to Tehran after Turkmenistan denied permission to cross its airspace.
The restrictions come after the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector and warned companies and aviation service providers in other countries about dealing with sanctioned Iranian airlines.
Iranian officials say diplomatic and aviation talks are under way with some countries to resolve the restrictions and resume flights.
