Pakistani fighter jets carried out air strikes early on Monday, 21 September, targeting areas in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces of Kunar and Paktika.
Hamidullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, said a residential house in Nurgal district of Kunar was hit, killing three members of one family, including a woman, and injuring four others.
He said two locations in the Rukha and Turkundi areas of Barmal district in Paktika were also targeted. A shop and an unoccupied house were destroyed, but no casualties were reported there.
Meanwhile, two Pakistani security officials told The Associated Press that 28 militants were killed in the strikes. The claim has not been independently verified. Pakistan’s military had not issued an official statement on the strikes at the time of the Reuters report.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government’s spokesman, condemned the attacks and said Kabul would respond.
The strikes came after nearly three months of relative calm between Kabul and Islamabad, raising concerns over renewed tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
