The US State Department has approved the sale of military equipment worth nearly $2bn to Saudi Arabia, saying the move is aimed at strengthening the defence capabilities of one of Washington’s key allies in the region. The announcement comes as tensions in the Middle East have risen again following the collapse of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. At the same time, Iran has intensified attacks on US military bases in the region, while the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the start of a new round of operations against Iran.
