The UK government has proposed a new policy under its Immigration and Asylum Bill requiring some refugees who are granted protection in the country to repay approximately £10,000 in accommodation and support costs if they enter employment and earn income. The measures are designed to recover public spending from adults deemed financially able to contribute, according to government plans. Under the proposal, refugees who are allowed to work would be required to repay the fixed amount before becoming eligible for permanent residency. Those whose asylum claims are rejected and who leave the country would also be expected to repay the costs in order to retain the possibility of returning to the UK in the future. UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the changes reflect the principle that while supporting refugees is a right, it also comes with responsibilities. She added that when individuals are able to contribute to society and repay the generosity of the British public, it is expected that they do so.
