Pro-refugee protests turn violent in London

LONDON: Large anti-refugee protests organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson in central London have escalated into violence, resulting in the arrest of at least 25 individuals. These demonstrations, titled “United Kingdom of Great Britain,” attracted over 110,000 participants, marking them as some of the largest far-right protests in modern British history. The Metropolitan Police of London reported that officers were attacked with bottles and other objects, resulting in 26 injuries among the police, with four requiring hospitalization due to serious wounds. The protests began near Waterloo Bridge, with demonstrators marching towards government offices in Whitehall. Protesters chanted slogans against Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s policies, holding placards demanding that refugees be sent “home.” Organizer Tommy Robinson accused refugees of having more rights in British courts compared to British citizens, stressing that “the British people who built this country are now being deprived of their rights.” It is worth noting that similar protests occurred in London last year, which some international newspapers described as indicative of a deep social divide regarding immigration issues.
