KABUL: In the aftermath of deadly earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan last night, several domestic political leaders and foreign officials have expressed their condolences and called for immediate assistance for victims. Former President Hamid Karzai extended his condolences to the families of victims, urging local businessmen, charitable organizations, and international agencies to provide aid to those affected by this tragedy. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, former head of the National Reconciliation Council, expressed his deep sorrow over the losses and damages caused by earthquake in Kunar on his Facebook page, offering sympathy to families of deceased and injured. Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, expressed his condolences and called for assistance for affected individuals. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister of Pakistan, conveyed condolences on behalf of the Pakistani government and people, stating, “Our hearts are with families and communities affected by this disaster.” Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed sympathy for earthquake victims in Nangarhar and Kunar, emphasizing India’s readiness to collaborate and support Afghan people in addressing aftermath of this incident. Also, Iranian Foreign Ministry extended condolences to the families of the victims. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced Iran’s full readiness to send humanitarian, medical, and relief assistance to Afghanistan. As per the latest reports, over 800 people have lost their lives, and nearly 3,000 have been injured. The highest casualties have been reported in the districts of Noor Gul, Choka, and the villages of Mazar Dara, Wadir, Shomash, Masood, and Ereet, many of which have been completely or partially devastated. Officials warn that the final toll is still uncertain, and the number of casualties may rise.
