The United Nations Security Council has begun reviewing a US-proposed draft resolution, coordinated with France and the United Kingdom, threatening Iran with sanctions if tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue. According to Reuters, citing Western diplomats, discussions are underway on the draft, which is backed by the United States and Bahrain and could lead to sanctions against Iran. The draft warns that continued attacks or threats to commercial shipping could prompt the Council to consider further measures, including the possible use of force. It also describes any disruption of the waterway as a threat to international peace and security. It calls on Iran to halt attacks, provide information on naval mines, and not obstruct clearance efforts, while urging cooperation with UN initiatives to ensure the flow of aid and essential goods. Diplomats say Washington aims to finalize the text by May 8 and bring it to a vote early next week. China says it is still reviewing the draft and has not decided whether to use its veto.
