US Vice President JD Vance has defended the current administration’s approach to talks with Iran, while criticising those who oppose diplomatic engagement, saying many of them previously encouraged more airstrikes in countries such as Afghanistan. Speaking at a military base in the state of Virginia during an event marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of US independence and honouring American armed forces, Mr Vance said critics of diplomacy were often the same voices that had previously pushed for increased bombing campaigns abroad. “What I have noticed about people who criticise the administration for negotiating is that they are the same people who encouraged us to drop a couple more bombs in places like Afghanistan,” he said. Mr Vance added that many of those who previously supported expanded military action “never really had to explain what the purpose of those strikes was.”
