President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for an official visit, just hours after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reached Islamabad to join the presidential delegation. Araghchi traveled to Pakistan from Oman and held talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior Pakistani officials ahead of the president’s arrival, discussing bilateral issues and regional developments, Iranian state media reported. Prior to that, Araghchi had traveled to Oman from Switzerland along with a delegation that included Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf for consultations on issues related to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian sources said that appreciating Pakistan’s role in facilitating communication and mediation between Iran and the United States is among the main objectives of Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad. Expanding economic cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties are also on the agenda. Pakistan has played an important mediating role between Tehran and Washington in recent months. A memorandum of understanding between the two countries, known as the “Islamabad Agreement,” is regarded as one of the outcomes of these efforts.
