Israeli media have reported a dispute between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and military chief Eyal Zamir over a possible military operation involving Iran ahead of Israel’s election.
Channel 12 reported on Sunday that Zamir had received instructions from Israel’s political leadership to carry out an unspecified military action. According to the broadcaster, he called for further discussion and requested a signed legal document authorising the operation.
The report said military officials were concerned that the proposed action could trigger a new confrontation with Iran at a sensitive time, shortly before Israel’s parliamentary election on 27 October.
Channel 12, citing unnamed sources, also reported concerns within the military that the political leadership could seek to use the Iran issue for political gain. Political sources rejected the allegations, describing them as completely false.
Meanwhile, Channel 14 reported remarks attributed to Netanyahu suggesting that Israel would launch another attack on Iran. However, Netanyahu denied reports of a dispute with Zamir over Iran, rejecting claims of a confrontation between them.
The reports come amid continued regional tensions and concerns about the possibility of renewed military action against Iran. However, there has been no independent confirmation of a final decision to launch another attack.
The precise nature of the proposed military operation has not been disclosed, with Channel 12 saying its reporting was subject to Israeli military censorship.
