Richard Lindsay, Britain’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, has called for de-escalation, respect for freedom of expression, and accountability for any unlawful harm following the dispersal of a protest gathering in the Jebrail area of Herat province. Writing on X on Tuesday evening, Lindsay said: “Deeply concerned by reports of the use of force on the streets of Herat. Calling for de-escalation, respect for freedom of expression, and accountability for any unlawful harm.” His comments came after Taliban security forces dispersed a gathering in the Jebrail area of Herat on Tuesday. According to Sayed Masoud Hosseini, spokesperson for the Herat Police Command, the gathering had caused tensions and disrupted public order. Hosseini said a number of individuals had assembled under the pretext of protesting over the issue of hijab and were seeking to disturb public order. He added that security forces intervened in a timely manner, preventing the situation from escalating and bringing it fully under control. Meanwhile, some local sources and eyewitnesses reported that Taliban forces confronted protesters and detained several people. The claims have not been officially confirmed or denied by Taliban authorities.
