Rubio: A Weak Deal With Iran Is Worse Than No Deal

US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said any weak agreement with Iran could have consequences worse than having no agreement at all, stressing that sanctions relief would only be possible if Tehran provides meaningful commitments. Speaking on Tuesday, June 2, during a hearing of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio said, “A bad deal with Iran is worse than no deal.” Rubio added that Washington is currently engaged in discussions with Tehran on issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme and said Iran has shown a willingness in some areas to limit its nuclear activities. The US foreign minister emphasized that the United States will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and will not retreat from its position on the issue. He also said that any easing of sanctions would depend on tangible progress in the nuclear file, adding: “We will not lift sanctions simply because the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened.” In another part of his remarks, Rubio referred to regional developments and recent tensions, saying that no country supports the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The comments come as negotiations and tensions between Washington and Tehran continue, with diplomatic efforts facing significant challenges.
