Sofia Sarwari, an Afghan grappling athlete, has secured a championship title at the World Jiu-Jitsu League competition held in Frankfurt, Germany. According to information she shared, Sarwari won the gold medal in the “No-Gi” category (without a traditional uniform) after achieving four consecutive victories without defeat. She also claimed first place in the “Absolute” division, competing against eight athletes from various countries, and earned the championship belt. Grappling is a form of martial arts that does not involve striking; instead, it focuses on techniques such as takedowns, submissions, and controlling the opponent on the ground. Sarwari is among a number of Afghan female athletes who have continued their sports careers abroad. Her achievement has received positive reactions on social media platforms. This comes at a time when restrictions on women’s and girls’ participation in sports remain in place within Afghanistan, prompting many female athletes to leave the country in order to continue their professional activities.
