UN: Ban on Girls’ Education in Afghanistan Remains Major Barrier to Development

The United Nations in Afghanistan says the continued ban on girls’ education above sixth grade remains one of the most serious structural obstacles to fair human capital development in the country. In a statement issued on Sunday, the UN noted that these restrictions are negatively affecting education and overall societal progress. It added that more than 34 million people in Afghanistan have benefited from its aid programs, while over 4.6 million children have been enrolled in schools with its support. The organization also reported the creation of around 45,000 permanent jobs, benefiting both women and men across different regions. However, the UN warned that declining humanitarian aid, climate change, mass displacement, and ongoing restrictions are placing heavy pressure on families and essential services. Girls above sixth grade in Afghanistan have been denied access to education for nearly five years.
