According to a report by the Axios website, the administration of Donald Trump has begun preliminary discussions about possible peace talks with Iran after three weeks of war. Axios, a U.S. news website, has extensive access to accurate information within many American media circles. The report states that Trump’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, are playing a key role in these potential diplomatic efforts. Both individuals had also participated in recent talks with Iran prior to the war. According to the report, any agreement to end the war would need to include several key points, such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz, resolving the issue of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles, and establishing a long-term agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and regional proxy groups. On the other hand, Iran’s demands are said to include the announcement of a ceasefire, guarantees that the war will not resume, and the payment of compensation or reparations. Axios adds that in recent days there has been no direct contact between the United States and Iran, but Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom have exchanged messages between the two sides. According to the report, Egypt and Qatar have told the United States and Israel that Iran is willing to negotiate but under tough conditions. A U.S. official said that Washington wants Iran to accept six conditions, including halting its missile program for five years, zero uranium enrichment, dismantling nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow, strict international monitoring of centrifuges, and a regional arms control agreement. The report comes as Trump had previously stated that he is considering a gradual reduction of military operations against Iran and an end to the war.
