KABUL: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned that the winter of 2025–2026 will begin drier and warmer than usual in Afghanistan. According to the organization’s forecasts, precipitation from November 2025 to February 2026 will be below average, particularly in the northern, northeastern, and central highland regions. Soil moisture shortages are being observed across the country, and snow reserves in the main mountainous basins will remain significantly below long-term averages. Although there is a possibility of a few precipitation events in January, these changes will be rare enough that they will not compensate for the cumulative rainfall deficit. Afghanistan faced drought and low precipitation last year, and the risk of continued water and agricultural crises remains serious.
