KABUL: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated in its latest report that the Taliban “do not represent the people and have become increasingly repressive.” This report covers the situation in Afghanistan from August 2024 to July 31, 2025. According to the report, the policies and decrees of the Taliban, particularly the law on “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice,” have restricted people’s access to fundamental rights, especially for women and girls, leading to what can be described as “systematic gender-based harassment” or “gender apartheid.” Approximately 9.5 million people are facing severe food insecurity, and 4.6 million mothers and children are suffering from malnutrition. The exclusion of women and girls from education and employment has negatively impacted the economy, with an estimated loss of about $920 million projected between 2024 and 2026. The return of over 2.1 million Afghan migrants and a decrease in international aid have increased pressure on resources and the livelihoods of millions. The High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned that arbitrary detentions of human rights activists and journalists continue, urging the Taliban to repeal their discriminatory laws and policies, but no response has been received so far.
