KABUL: Matiullah Tarab, a prominent national epic poet, has unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack.
His family and close friends have confirmed his death.
Over the past decade, Tarab’s works have gained significant popularity among poetry and literature enthusiasts for their themes of patriotism, national unity, and the expression of the people’s struggles. In recent years, he became a notable figure in epic poetry, actively participating in cultural poetry contests, particularly in gatherings controlled by the Taliban.
Reports indicate that his last appearance at the Narenj Gol (Orang Flower) poetry contest featured sharp and critical verses directed at the Taliban, which may have contributed to the recent restrictions imposed on cultural and literary programs in the country.
Details regarding the time and location of Matiullah Tarab’s funeral have not yet been released.
Scholars, poets, and cultural organizations in the country have described his sudden passing as a significant loss for Afghanistan’s literary community.
