Mohammad Sharifullah, an Afghan national, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a US federal court for providing material support to ISIS-K.
Sharifullah was convicted by a federal jury in Virginia in April. Prosecutors said he helped ISIS-K by scouting a route to Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul ahead of the 26 August 2021 Abbey Gate bombing.
The attack, carried out during the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed 13 US service members and about 160 Afghans.
However, the jury could not reach a verdict on whether Sharifullah was directly responsible for deaths resulting from the bombing. His lawyers said he had not been convicted of conduct directly causing the airport attack.
