KABUL: The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant last week for Hebatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the head of the group’s court, on charges of crimes against humanity.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Afghanistan, welcomed the issuance of this warrant, stating that further actions are necessary to ensure justice.

UN experts have also indicated that this warrant represents a significant step in combating impunity, particularly as women and girls in Afghanistan have faced repression under Taliban rule for nearly four years.

In response, the Taliban has declared that they do not recognize the authority of the International Criminal Court.
