Over 11 million children will be vaccinated across Afghanistan

KABUL: A four-day national polio vaccination campaign has been kicked off to vaccinate 11.8 million children under the age of 5 across the country, the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health said in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, in coordination with international partners, the second national polio eradication campaign of launched to vaccinate 11.8 million children across Afghanistan, from 26

to 29 May 2025, for four days.

“Mebendazole tablets will also be administered to children from 24-59 months of age. It is used to treat infections caused by worms,” the statement said.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Mawlavi Noor Jalal Jalali, Taliban’s acting Minister of Public Health, said that his-led ministry is committed to stopping wild poliovirus in Afghanistan.

“We will make every effort and continue polio vaccination campaigns and complementary health services until we eradicate polio from Afghanistan,” the statement quoted Jalali as saying.

Polio is a viral paralysis disease that has no cure, but can only be prevented by the polio vaccine.
