The Democratic Party has regained control of the US Senate after winning several key seats previously held by Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
According to the Associated Press, Democrats secured victories in a number of traditionally Republican-leaning states, ending the Republican Party’s majority in the upper chamber of Congress.
Among the key victories, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa, Adam Hamilton beat incumbent Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas, and James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in Texas.
In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Senator Jon Husted, while Roy Cooper won the Senate race in North Carolina, defeating Trump-backed Republican candidate Michael Whatley. Democrat Annie Andrews also defeated Republican Darline Graham in South Carolina.
Democrats also retained seats in Georgia and New Hampshire, where Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election and Chris Pappas defeated former Senator John Sununu.
The results mark a significant setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, with Democratic control of the Senate expected to make it more difficult for the administration to advance its legislative agenda and secure approval for key appointments.
The House of Representatives remains undecided, with votes still being counted in several closely contested races.
