Iran is preparing to host another meeting with representatives from regional countries to discuss Afghanistan in the coming months, the country’s foreign ministry spokesman has said.
Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran intended to continue consultations with regional countries on Afghanistan and its role in regional security.
Speaking at a weekly news conference on Monday, 2 November, Mr Baghaei said Iranian officials had discussed Afghanistan during recent regional visits, including trips to Turkey and Pakistan.
He added that further consultations had also taken place on the sidelines of the Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan in October.
Baghaei did not provide a specific date for the proposed meeting or details of the countries expected to attend and the issues to be discussed.
Previous meetings involving Iran, Russia, China and Pakistan have focused on Afghanistan’s political and security situation, counter-terrorism, economic cooperation and engagement with the Taliban government.
Russia hosted the eighth Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan on 7 October, bringing together representatives from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and Central Asian countries.
