Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, has rejected remarks by a Pakistani army spokesman questioning Afghanistan’s status as a country.
Mr Khalilzad said Afghanistan had existed as an independent country for centuries before Pakistan was established, describing the claim that Afghanistan was not a country as incorrect under international law.
His comments came in response to remarks by Pakistani military spokesman General Chaudhry, who said that “Afghanistan is not a country”.
Khalilzad also urged Pakistani officials to change what he described as a risky and unsuccessful policy towards Afghanistan.
He said the two neighbouring countries needed each other and should work towards building positive relations.
