Powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes Panama, damaging buildings

A powerful earthquake with a reported magnitude of 7.7 struck Panama on Friday, 9 October, causing damage to buildings and prompting evacuations in affected areas.

The earthquake was reported at 12:56 local time, with its epicentre near Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province, southern Panama. It was initially reported at a depth of around 33km.

Images circulating on social media appeared to show damage to buildings following the tremor. Shaking was also felt in Panama City, while reports indicated that several structures had been damaged.

Authorities were assessing the extent of the damage. Further details about casualties and the overall impact of the earthquake had yet to be independently confirmed.
