French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed the possibility of the UK rejoining the European Union, describing such a move as “very good news”.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, Macron said France would welcome a decision by the UK to rejoin the bloc and called it “a good decision”.
Sánchez said Spain would also welcome the UK back with “open arms”.
The comments came as EU membership was raised again as one of the options being considered for the UK’s long-term relationship with Europe.
Macron also said the UK could not remain outside the EU while selectively benefiting from some of the bloc’s advantages and freedoms. He said closer ties with the EU would also require Britain to accept the limitations that come with being outside the bloc.
