California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill recognising Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays under state law.
The legislation allows eligible state employees to use existing holiday or leave provisions to observe the two Islamic festivals.
It also allows public schools and community colleges to close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha based on local agreements.
The law does not require all schools across California to close on the two occasions.
