The Sindh High Court in Pakistan has ordered a medical university to allow Afghan students to return to their classes and extended interim legal protection for students challenging orders requiring them to return to Afghanistan.
The ruling comes after the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council directed educational institutions earlier this month to prepare registered Afghan students for repatriation and stop admitting or transferring new Afghan students during the current academic year.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, however, has said that Afghan students with valid visas who are enrolled in recognised educational programmes can complete their studies.
The differing positions have raised questions over how the medical council’s directive will be implemented and what it means for Afghan students studying in Pakistan.
