The United Nations says 21.9 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2026, while only 29.7% of the funding required to provide that aid had been secured by the end of August.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the 2026 humanitarian plan requires $1.71 billion, but only $509.3 million had been funded by the end of August.
The UN says the funding shortfall has led to reduced humanitarian assistance, with some health and nutrition services affected or suspended.
OCHA has called for timely and predictable international funding, warning that continued shortages could further limit access to food, healthcare, nutrition, water and other essential services for vulnerable Afghans.
