China has condemned US sanctions on Iranian airlines as “illegal”, saying it opposes unilateral measures that lack a basis in international law.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that were not authorised by the UN Security Council.
His comments came a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iranian airlines could be forced to cease operations worldwide within days as a result of US sanctions.
The dispute comes as Washington and Beijing prepare for a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
