US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Sunday that it could face increased economic pressure and threats against its leadership if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with Washington.
Iranian military officials, meanwhile, said any new US attack would be met with a strong response, warning that American forces and their allies in the region could be targeted.
The statements came as fighting and tensions continued across the region. The Houthi movement in Yemen, which is backed by Iran, has carried out missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia in recent days, saying it targeted positions in Riyadh and facilities linked to Saudi oil giant Aramco. Saudi Arabia has responded by targeting Houthi positions.
Reuters reported that China has also urged Iran to work to contain the Houthi movement amid the increase in attacks.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions are continuing on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Mr Trump has also said he is willing to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
