Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans to ban the wearing of the burqa and niqab in schools and limit the number of foreign pupils in individual classes.
Meloni outlined the proposals on Sunday at a gathering of the youth wing of her Brothers of Italy party, as immigration is expected to remain a major issue ahead of next year’s general election.
She also said parents of foreign pupils facing serious difficulties integrating into the Italian education system would be required to attend Italian-language classes.
Meloni said people who come to Italy and want to build their future there should learn the language, understand the country’s culture and respect its laws.
