Claims about the whereabouts and status of Hamza bin Laden, the son of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, have resurfaced.
In 2024, some media outlets, citing intelligence sources, reported that Hamza bin Laden was still alive and could be involved in efforts to strengthen al-Qaeda’s presence in Afghanistan.
Those reports alleged that he was linked to al-Qaeda activities in Afghanistan, including the group’s training facilities and efforts to reorganise its network. However, the claims have not been independently verified.
The United States announced in 2019 that Hamza bin Laden was believed to have been killed in a counter-terrorism operation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. The UN Security Council has also listed him because of his links to al-Qaeda.
In a report published on 10 September 2026, Reuters did not identify Hamza bin Laden as al-Qaeda’s current leader. It reported that the Egyptian militant Saif al-Adel is regarded as the network’s de facto leader.
There is currently no independent confirmation that Hamza bin Laden is alive or active in Afghanistan. The claims should therefore be treated as unverified reports, rather than confirmed facts.
